Forward! That's what we're going to do during the fifth stage

13 August 2021 20:00

This week we are staying in Maassluis to look after friends' dogs. They would like to explore Italy without any worries and of course we wholeheartedly grant them that. For the dog this means that she often goes out with me, because I must train for Walk for Homs. I think it would be nice to be able to complete this beautiful hike without blisters and confused muscles. Because the dog has now taken more steps than she ever did in a week, I decided to give her a day of rest today before setting out the fifth leg.

Take the ferry

At 06.30 am the alarm went off to start this stage around 09.00 am in Gorinchem. It already went wrong during the transfer, because I forgot to check out and check in again with another carrier. But nothing to worry, because apparently I can fix this online. Once I arrived in Gorinchem, I realized that I didn't really know what time the ferry to Woudrichem would sail. I'm glad I realize this now and not next year, because when I arrived in the harbor I saw the ferry heading for Woudrichem just leave. This allowed me to enjoy an hour on the quay and I could join the next boat and enjoy the beautiful view of Woudrichem when entering. What a beautiful fortified town. On our route we don't see all of it, but we do see the gem in my eyes. The Rijkswal, the houses that stand on the shore and look out over the Merwede towards South Holland.

Once I have walked across the shore, I walk into the greenery and near a small harbour. In the distance I can already see the next ferry. For a moment I get a restless feeling, because when I hear the word ferry I have more the image of a large sturdy boat and on which many people can go. Like the one just now. Only this boat lets my view on this matter a bit. This boat fits 18 people. At least if we settle for a while and not in times of corona. For a moment I am lost in my thoughts looking at the boat, but then the 'Schipper' arrives and I see a sign with the text 'sailing on demand'. What a relief. I do not have to worry that this ferry only sails once an hour, because then arriving on time at the other ferries and ultimately Heusden will be a challenge. I tell the Skipper about Walk for Homs after the crossing and he promises to transfer us all as quick as possible.

Along Loevestein Caste and the Schouwendijk

Relieved, I continue on the road. The Komoot app, whose speech function is now working, tells me to turn right for Slot Loevestein. I read on a hiker's website that this route gives a better view of the castle. So I turn right. What was once a path along a beautiful row of trees quickly turned into a muddy adventure. The path ends and the app tells me to keep right. Here my gut tells me to go straight, because it's faster and closer to the castle. I just don't want to throw this hiker's advice off me too soon, so I head to the right. There is no trail here, only a dried ditch, so I go back and follow my gut feeling. A little further on I have to brave the old ditch. I look for a point where I can go across, but right there is a group of bulls. I had my eye on this group before, because they had been looking at me for a while as if I'm a toreros, waving a red flag. I try another stretch but my shoes, already soaked by the tall grass, disappear in the mud here. It is unfortunately no different than that I will have to pass these bulls. Like my previous adventure with cuddling some cows, I just decide to give these animals a 'Hello' and say that everything is fine and I'm really not a bullfighter. They keep staring at me, but don't move. Except for the bull that is blocking the way, he happily steps aside. So there are also charming bulls. Once out of the muddy landscape, I realize that I haven't seen the castle at all. Because of this and because of the mud I decide that this will not be part of the pilgrimage. My route continues on a motorway with beautiful views of a nature reserve. I see a couple walking in the distance and decide that we will also walk there next year. I arrive at an intersection about the same time and I ask the couple how they got there and of course tell me about my plans. I also see that there is a beter route over a dike instead of the car road ahead, so I don't hesitate for a moment and follow this route. At the end of the dike we can run down the dike together, just like the Von Trapp family, so I also take this with me on the route. Once down, another hiker passes me and while chatting about our hiking adventures I forget to pay attention to the route. No problem. The route has already been changed, so this can also be adapted.

Forward! Go straight ahead

When I continue my way over the beautiful Maasdijk, Komoot is nice and quiet. Apparently I only have to keep walking straight to the third ferry for the time being. Great, because that fits nicely with the statement of my uncle, Frans van der Lugt: "ilal amam, go ahead!"
A dike is not a dike if you have a choice for walking it on the road or next to the dike in the greenery. I choose to mainly continue walking on the road on the dike. Here I walk nice and high in order to enjoy all the beautiful houses with thatched roofs, the curious cows, the shelves, the horses, the boats passing by and the old-fashioned laundry hanging outside to dry with very traditional underwear.

Two more ferries to go

What a nice day I am having. The walk seems very long on paper, but today we can enjoy four crossings with the ferry. That will cover more than a mile. Near the third ferry there is a sign to the right for the ferry, I take that a little too literally and end up in a private yard where a boy stands who just wants to get into the car and says: "For sure you are going to the ferry, that is that way!". I believe that I am not the only one who sometimes takes turning right a bit too literally. I thank him and then his mother quickly shouts: "You won't get very far here!". To which I say: "If you give me a lift, I will!" and we both start laughing.

Once I arrive at the ferry, I can sit down and have something to eat, because I haven't gotten around to that yet. The transition is beautiful, sailing away from Nederhemert and arriving in the green of the remainder of the route. I decide to follow my gut feeling and walk around Castle Nederhemert to the Berne ferry. At the end of this crossing Heusden is almost insight. I walk over the dike into this beautifully restored fortified town. The terraces are full, so it's a bit like a crowed at the finish. I finsihed another beautiful stage and I can now tell you that no one stage is the same!
